Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and that will certainly be the case for one lady as the most elegantly dressed guest on Sunday will leave The K Club with a €5,000 diamond.
Appleby, the prestigious Dublin jeweller, have been a Championship Supplier of the Smurfit Kappa European Open for seven years, during which time they have given out a hugely generous €84,000 worth of cut diamonds as daily prizes to corporate hospitality guests.
The highlight of Appleby’s many initiatives during tournament week is the prize of a beautifully cut diamond worth €100,000, which is presented to the first professional to achieve a cumulative score of 12 under par on the par five holes at the conclusion of the four tournament rounds.
This prize, which has run in each of the past six years, was designed around the fact that the players would be playing 16 par fives over the four days. Thomas Bjorn is the only player to have won this sensational prize, playing the par fives on the Palmer Course in 14 under par but this year the weather has put paid to that.
With the 18th fairway left completely saturated after prolonged rain, European Tour Officials had to make the hole a par three for the first two rounds in order that it remained playable but unfortunately ruled out the Appleby prize.
Nevertheless Appleby remain a significant supporter of the Smurfit Kappa European Open and their new initiative is certain to attract plenty of attention among the guests on Sunday.
