Ballesteros leaves intensive care

Seve Ballesteros has left intensive care in hospital in Madrid after undergoing a fourth brain operation. He had been in intensive care briefly on Tuesday following his most recent surgery.

A valve was implanted in the 51 year old Spaniard's brain to drain fluid, while the surgery also repaired a bone defect caused by an earlier operation.

His condition is reported as stable and he will remain in Madrid's La Paz unit for monitoring.

A statement from La Paz Hospital said: "The patient, Severiano Ballesteros, underwent scheduled surgery for the placement a cephalorachidian fluid VP shunt. In the same intervention, the medical team has done a cranioplastia to the repair a bone defect. His
situation is stable and will remain in the Intensive Care Unit."

Ballesteros's tumour was discovered in October after he collapsed at madrid Airport, and the five-time Major Champion underwent three operations to remove the growth.

His condition improved and the Spaniard was allowed by consultants to return home to his family in November, although a hospital statement did warn there was a long way to go before he would make a full recovery.

Ballesteros won 87 titles during his career, including The Open in 1979, 1984 and 1988 and the Masters Tournament in 1980 and 1983.

He retired from golf last year following arthritic back and knee problems, while doctors discovered an irregular heartbeat when he was admitted to hospital in 2007.
