Bekker was ten under par for the tournament - six under on the day - with two holes of his round still to play.

That left him a shot clear of compatriot Andrew McLardy, who was three under for his round with seven holes to play.

Four players were a shot further back on eight under - and half of those were South African.

Tyrone Van Aswegen was six under for the day through 16 holes, while overnight leader Trevor Fisher Jnr was yet to begin his second round.

Alongside them were England’s Danny Willett - four under on the day through 13 - and Scotland’s David Drysdale, who was two under having played six holes.
