The $3.5million tournament, which is being staged for a fifth year in a row at the Sutton Coldfield venue, marks the climax of the Ryder Cup qualification period for Team Europe.

On the back of his runner-up finish on home soil last week, Rasmus Højgaard is the only player who can overtake Shane Lowry to claim the sixth and final automatic qualifying spot.

Among those hoping to impress Captain Luke Donald, who is teeing it up this week, with a view to earning a Captain’s Pick on September 1 are Aaron Rai, Matt Fitzpatrick, Matt Wallace, Nicolai Højgaard and the in-form Marco Penge.

Among those also in action are last year’s runner-up Thriston Lawrence, Haotong Li, Danny Willett and a host of past champions.

Niklas Nørgaard is the defending champion this week after winning his first DP World Tour title with a two-shot victory at The Belfry last season.

From insight into the week’s most-picked players among Fantasy managers, to our ones to watch, we run the rule ahead of Thursday’s deadline to pick your team.

Who are the most backed players?

Fitzpatrick made his DP World Tour breakthrough at this event in 2015, and has since gone on to become a Major champion, with the Englishman featuring in 87% of teams.

Next in terms of popularity is Rasmus Højgaard with the Dane in 74% of teams, with Rai rounding out the top three at 70%.

Penge (47%) and Alex Noren (32%) round out the top five most picked players.

Who are our ones to watch?

Here, we pick out three players in action this week who are worth considering for your Fantasy team selections.

Favourite - Aaron Rai

There's little in it but Aaron Rai just has the nudge over fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick when it comes to this category, according to the betting markets. As the top-ranked player in the field, it is perhaps little surprise. Fell just short of progressing to the second of three FedEx Cup Playoffs earlier this month, with a tie for 22nd at the FedEx St. Jude Championship leaving him 53rd in the rankings. Now playing in the biggest events on the international stage, he is targeting a third top ten of the year. Made his Masters debut in April to complete the set of Major Championship starts. In his four previous starts at the Betfred British Masters, his best finish is a tie for 21st in 2020 - a year before we returned to The Belfry.

Form Horse - Matt Fitzpatrick

The Sheffield native made his DP World Tour breakthrough at the 2015 British Masters, claiming his first victory at Woburn as the youngest player in the field, and makes his return for the first time since 2018. Fell just short of qualifying for this week's Tour Championship on the PGA TOUR, finishing 34th despite a strong recent run. Since the Masters Tournament, when he started the week 74th in the world, he has made every cut across 13 straight starts. In that time, he has registered five top tens - four of those coming on the bounce, including at the Genesis Scottish Open and The Open. With Luke Donald watching on, he'll be hoping to ensure another strong performance as he targets a Captain's Pick for next month's Ryder Cup.

Wild Card - Brandon Stone

The data says Stone enjoys the test posed by the Brabazon Course at The Belfry, with the South African ranking as the fourth best player of those in the field for SG: Total. He carded a 64 on his way to finishing in a tie for 12th last year. While recent form on Tour is not on his side, with three missed cuts in his last four starts, he is a player who has history for performing well on the British Isles. Twice a winner in Scotland, his Rolex Series win at the Scottish Open in 2018 is something that will live long in the memory after carding eight birdies and an eagle in the final round at Gullane Golf Club. As the Back 9 gets under way, he will hope to climb the Race to Dubai Rankings to ensure progress to the DP World Tour Play-Offs in November.

As is common, home knowledge proved important as the Højgaard twins were the two most picked players. Of the top ten most popular players, eight were Scandinavian.

Penge, the ninth most picked player, edged out Rasmus Højgaard in a thrilling finish to reward the 5,885 players who picked him with 219 points as he became a two-time DP World Tour winner.

Nicolai Højgaard, our Favourite, finished in a tie for 34th, Form Horse Kristoffer Reitan finished in a tie for sixth, with Wild Card Lucas Bjerregaard in a tie for 14th.
