Thomas Björn of Denmark has accepted an invitation to become the new Chairman of The European Tour’s Tournament Committee.
Björn, 36, succeeds England’s Jamie Spence, who resigned in May after three years in the position. The appointment was confirmed at a meeting of the Tournament Committee at St Andrews last night prior to the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
A professional since 1993, Björn won the Challenge Tour Rankings in 1995 before going on to register nine victories on The European Tour International Schedule. He also played in two winning Ryder Cups for Europe in 1997 and 2002.
George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour, said: “In Jamie Spence we had an outstanding Chairman who worked tirelessly for the good of the Tour and had the welfare of all the individual Members at heart.
“It was the unanimous feeling of the Committee that Thomas is the right man to carry on that sterling work. He is a strong leader with a forceful personality who can liaise closely with the Membership and our Administration in helping to shape the future of the Tour.”
Björn commented: “I am honoured that my fellow professionals on the Tournament Committee have placed their faith in me to succeed Jamie. He was a popular and extremely hard-working Chairman and I will do my utmost to continue the good work which he started.”
