By the Numbers: ISPS HANDA Melbourne World Cup of Golf

1953– The first edition was held in 1953. Argentine duo Antonio Cerdá and Roberto De Vicenzo won what was then called the Canada Cup in Montreal.

6 – There have been winners from six of the seven world continents – Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, North America and South America.

29- Among the winners are 29 Major Champions, including Tiger Woods (1999, 2000), Jack Nicklaus (1963, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1971 and 1973), Arnold Palmer (1960, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1966 and 1967), Henrik Stenson (2008) and Ernie Els (1996 and 2001).

1– In 2009, brothers Edoardo and Francesco Molinari won the tournament. They are the only siblings to have won together.

2– There have only been two Asian victories. Japan claimed both, in 1957 and 2002.

23– Since the tournament’s inception, 23 different countries have played host – Australia, Argentina, Barbados, Colombia, China, Canada, England, France, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Spain, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, United States of America and Venezuela.

32 – For 32 editions, from 1954 to 1985, the tournament was hosted by a different country each year.

5– The USA won five consecutive editions, from 1960 to 1964. No country has matched that run of success.

3– Fred Couples and David Love III won the tournament for three consecutive years, from 1993 to 1995.

10– There have been ten occasions when a pairing have won in their home country – (1955 – Ed Furgol and Chick Harbert, 1957 – Torakichi Nakamura and Koichi Ono, 1959 – Kel Nagle and Peter Thomson, 1964 – Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, 1971 – Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino, 1978 – John Mahaffey and Andy North, 1993 and 1994 – Fred Couples and Davis Love III, 1996 – Ernie Els and Wayne Westner and 2013 – Adam Scott and Jason Day).

7– For seven editions between 2000 and 2006, the tournament was a recognised World Golf Championships event.
