The Cannes Open returns to The European Tour International Schedule after a three year absence with the announcement that the event will be played at Cannes Mougins from October 11-14, the date previously occupied by the cancelled Estoril Open.
Prize money for the 2001 Cannes Open will be 550,000 euro and will count towards the Volvo Order of Merit and the Seve Trophy Points List.
Players previously entered for the Estoril Open will automatically be entered for the Cannes Open and the closing date for entries has been extended by one week to Friday October 5.
The Cannes Open will be staged and supported by The European Tour and International Sports Management.
Andrew Chandler, Managing Director of International Sports Management, said: “We are delighted to assist The European Tour at short notice with the return of the Cannes Open to the 2001 European Tour International Schedule.”
The Cannes Open was last played in 1998 when Thomas Levet triumphed at Royal Mougins to become the first Frenchman to win on home soil since Jean Garaialde won the Open de France in 1969. Levet, of course, won his second European Tour title earlier this summer when he triumphed in a four-man play-off to capture the Victor Chandler British Masters at Woburn Golf and Country Club.
Cannes Mougins last hosted the Cannes Open in 1994 when Ian Woosnam triumphed by finishing five strokes ahead of Colin Montgomerie. Woosnam, 14 strokes off the lead after eight holes of the second round, had an eagle and 19 birdies over the closing 46 holes, including six in a row during the final round, to win the title.
The Cannes Open was a regular fixture on The European Tour International Schedule from 1984 to 1998.
