David Carter has been named European Tour Golfer of the Month for July following his victory in the Murphy’s Irish Open.
Carter captured his first European Tour title with scores of 68-72-67-71 for a six under par total of 278 at Druids Glen, then beat Colin Montgomerie at the first extra hole of a sudden death finish.
A panel from the Association of Golf Writers and The Golf Channel met with European Tour representatives during the Smurfit European Open and nominated Carter.
Renton Laidlaw, a Member of The Golf Channel commentary team, said: "David Carter produced a courageous last day performance, fighting back with a smile all the way, and his first European Tour win completed a remarkable come-back following life-saving brain surgery in Dubai 17 months earlier."
Carter and Lee Westwood, who won the Standard Life Loch Lomond tournament and finished tied third in the Dutch Open, were central in a vigorous debate which included Stephen Leaney, winner of the TNT Dutch Open, Raymond Russell, who finished tied fourth in the 127th Open Golf Championship, and Darren Clarke, runner-up in both the Volvo Scandinavian Masters and the TNT Dutch Open.
Carter is the seventh winner of the European Tour Golfer of the Month Award in 1998 following Thomas Björn (January), José Maria Olazábal (February), Ernie Els (March), Thomas Levet (April), Colin Montgomerie (May) and Sam Torrance (June).
