Charity prospers thanks to The Barclays Scottish Open

The Barclays Scottish Open today donated a cheque for £25,000 to the The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, the official charity for the 2009 championship.

The fantastic sum was presented to Phil McEwan, Vice Chairman of The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, by Simon Eaton, Head of Corporate Communications for Barclays Capital. Also present at the cheque handover was Celtic FC coach Neil Lennon.

The Hospice, situated beside the River Clyde in Glasgow City Centre, has benefited from a series of fundraising events at both the Barclays Scottish Open and Loch Lomond Golf Club during 2009, and a Charity Golf tournament to be held at the Club in October.

The Tour Players’ Foundation, the charitable foundation of The European Tour and its Members, supported the fundraising with a donation to The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice and Scottish Members of the Tour gave their assistance.  Alastair Forsyth, David Drysdale, Marc Warren, Gary Orr and Scott Drummond all gave lessons in the golf activity centre to encourage the fundraising at Loch Lomond.

Speaking on behalf of the Hospice, Morag Cunningham, Director of Fundraising and Marketing said, “We were absolutely delighted and honored to be named as the official charity for the Barclays Scottish Open and Loch Lomond Golf Club.  In addition to raising some much needed funds, it was a great opportunity for the Hospice to raise its profile through such a prestigious event and Club.”

The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice provides palliative care for people with a terminal illness and support for their families and carers.  All Hospice services are free, regardless of patients’ circumstances.  As a registered charity, the Hospice relies on the generosity of its supporters for more than two thirds of its funding.

“We were delighted to have The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice nominated as both Loch Lomond’s and the Barclays Scottish Open’s official charity for 2009,” said Niall Flanagan, the Club’s Managing Director. “It is an extremely worthy cause which we are proud to support."
