Chasing pack narrow gap to Reed

Patrick Reed saw his lead cut to one shot in the early stages of his third round at the Masters Tournament as Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler made moves up the leaderboard.

The American started the day two shots ahead of Marc Leishman but an early bogey left him eight under after four holes, with the Australian making four straight pars.

McIlroy picked up two shots in his first five holes to sit two shots back, while Fowler had an eagle and two birdies in his first seven to also be six under.

Bubba Watson was then at five under alongside Jon Rahm, who turned in 32.

Drizzle on and off in the early part of the day had softened the course up a little and while scoring was still tough, the conditions were certainly more favourable than days one and two.

A man to take advantage of that was Matthew Fitzpatrick who, after starting right on the cut-line, recovered from a bogey on the fifth with birdies on the seventh, eighth, 12th and 14th, and an eagle on the 15th to sign for a 67 and get to level par.

That trend continued when the later starters got under way with the group at four under soon swelled with Major Championship winners.

Watson birdied the second and third, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson both birdied the second and Fowler - searching for a first Major - eagled the par five.

Another Major winner soon joined the group but not as he would have liked as Henrik Stenson needed a drop after his tee-shot on the second and made a bogey.

Fowler's eagle had come from 25 feet and when he holed a 42-footer on the fifth, he broke out of the pack and got to five under.

McIlroy got a lucky bounce off the trees to make his par on the first and when he rolled home a 20-footer on the short third, he was in a tie for third.

Rahm had also made a birdie-birdie start to get to three under and when he chipped in for an eagle on the par five eighth, there were three players four shots off the lead.

That did not last for long, however, with Fowler putting his tee-shot on the par three sixth to 11 feet for yet another gain.

The birdies were flying in everywhere and when McIlroy made a gain from 20 feet back on the par three fourth, he was just three off the lead.

Reed had parred the first two holes but saw his second at the third roll back off the green and his lead was cut to one as he failed to get up and down.

Watson then picked up a birdie on the seventh to join the group at five under.

Louis Oosthuizen recovered from an opening bogey with birdies on the third, sixth and seventh to sit next to Johnson, Thomas and Stenson four shots off the lead.

Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth were then at three under, a shot ahead of Tommy Fleetwood and Cameron Smith.
