European Tour Members Darren Clarke, Retief Goosen and Vijay Singh are in hot pursuit of Stuart Appleby as the Mercedes Championships, the opening event of the 2004 US PGA Tour, goes into the final round.
Appleby shot a third round 66 over Maui’’s Plantation Course in Hawaii to move to 20 under par 199, two strokes clear of Singh, the winner of the 2003 US PGA Tour Money List, with two-time Volvo Order of Merit winner Goosen a further two strokes back following a superb 64, and Clarke in fourth place on 14 under par.
Singh, an Honorary Member of The European Tour, struggled with the putter as he posted a 69 to relinquish the lead to Appleby while Clarke, playing in the event for the first time, made an eagle two on the 17th, holing from 192 yards, en route to a four under par 69 to continue his impressive debut in the tournament.
