Colsaerts keeping his eye on the ball in Sicily

Nicolas Colsaerts will not be fooled by the stunning scenery when he tees it up at The Rocco Forte Open - Verdura, Sicily this week.

The big-hitting Belgian has a good record at Verdura Golf Club with top fives in his two appearances in 2011 and 2012, when he was in a run of form that earned him a place in the Ryder Cup team at Medinah.

The European Tour now returns to the stunning layout at Agrigento but Colsaerts knows that behind the breathtaking sea views lies a serious challenge.

"I'm really glad we're here, it's a beautiful place," he said. "The sea is unbelievably calm and blue and it's a fantastic place to stay at.

"A nice resort, I came here a couple of years ago. Italian food and all that kind of stuff makes it a special week.

"I remember a very good course, I remember the green set-ups were quite nice, there's picturesque holes by the water but it's actually pretty demanding if the wind blows a bit.

"I think you've got it all, you've got beautiful views but a technical golf course.

"I liked my first experience of the place a couple of years ago so when I heard we were coming back here, I put my hand up."

Colsaerts is without a win since 2012 and was in danger of losing his playing privileges in 2015 before making his last seven cuts of the season.

An upturn in form saw him finish 2016 31st on the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex and while his performances this term so far have been patchy, he feels a win is not too far away.

"It's been okay for a while, I keep shooting myself in the foot here and there on occasion, that kind of stops my momentum," he said.

"I feel like I'm playing good enough but it's just these little details that when you add them all up make a bit of a difference.

"I'm into this building process of trying to get rid of these mistakes. I'm kind of actually waiting for a week to kick off a decent campaign."
