Open Champion Ben Curtis climbed to third place in the HSBC Major Championship Ranking, his victory at Royal St George’’s giving him the opportunity to compete for the richest ever prize in European Tour and US PGA Tour golf at the HSBC World Match Play Championship at Wentworth Club in October.
As a Major Championship winner, Curtis joins World Number One Tiger Woods, defending champion Ernie Els, Masters Champion Mike Weir and US Open Champion Jim Furyk on the list of players guaranteed qualification for the 40th anniversary of the event.
Vijay Singh, joint runner-up in the Open Championship, is leading European Tour Member in the ranking while Thomas Björn, who shared second place with Singh, climbs to eighth place. Canadian Mike Weir leads the rankings.
The final qualifying event for this year’’s HSBC World Match Play Championship is the US PGA Championship, to be played at Oak Hill from August 14-17. Following the fourth and final Major, the top ten in the rankings, plus Els and Woods, will have the chance to play in the HSBC World Match Play Championship.
