Darren Clarke is to spearhead a major initiative for the development of junior golf in Ireland. Aimed at both boys and girls, the Darren Clarke Foundation has been welcomed enthusiastically by the Golfing Union of Ireland and the Irish Ladies' Golf Union.
The Foundation will cater for players throughout the Island and will initially focus on a two-fold approach with the appointment and funding of golf professionals throughout the country aimed at providing an introduction to the game and quality coaching and tuition to boys and girls who may be interested in the game but for whatever reason may not have access to facilities, equipment or a golf course. Secondly, the initiative is aimed at the accomplished and established junior players with a view to honing and improving their skills and assisting them in their desire to continuing to improve their game.
"I am very excited about this project, which reflects my determination to try and give something back to amateur golf, in particular junior golf, in this country", said Clarke. "Through the success I have had in my amateur and professional career, I have always been aware of the debt I owe to the game here at club, provincial and national levels."
He went on: "Golf has been very good to me and I want to see good young Irish players, boys and girls, getting the opportunity of making similar progress in a game we all love. In addition I would love to see young kids who might not otherwise have the chance, getting a chance to be involved in the game and to get some proper professional coaching. Who knows we might have another Tiger Woods out there!".
