David Howell has become the third Englishman to win the RBS Shot of the Month Award in 2005, collecting the RBS Shot of the Month trophy and a cheque for £1000 to donate to a charity of his choice.
The 30 year old, currently third on The European Tour Order of Merit, was the choice of the voting panel for his magnificent second shot at the par five 15th hole at Carton House Golf Club during the final round of the Nissan Irish Open.
Trailing eventual winner Stephen Dodd by three shots, Howell launched a superb three wood from 260 yards to within three feet of the pin for a vital eagle three which helped him force a play-off with the Welshman.
In second place for the May Award was Thomas Björn’’s stunning long iron second to within 15 feet of the pin on the 17th at the Marriott Forest of Arden, a shot which set up an eagle three and gave him the impetus to go on and win The Daily Telegraph Dunlop Masters, his first European Tour victory in three years.
Third place went to Steve Webster who, en route to his maiden European Tour title in the Telecom Italia Open, played a wonderful wedge shot from the semi-rough on the 17th hole in the final round to set up a birdie three which gave him the impetus to go on and win.
The RBS Shot of the Month Award, in association with The European Tour, Sky Sports and The Daily Telegraph, is presented to the Tour Member for the shot judged to be the most outstanding played during each calendar month on The European Tour International Schedule. The winning shots from each month are entered towards the RBS Shot of the Year Award.
Other winners in 2005 have been Englishmen Nick Dougherty (January) and Miles Tunnicliff (February), while South African Ernie Els won the award in both March and April.
