Day one digest: 2022 US PGA Championship

Everything you need to know about day one at the season's second Major Championship.

Rory McIlroy

Rory ran to the front, Will found a way, Viktor had a fan club and John was John on day one of the 2022 US PGA Championship.

Here is everything you need to know from Thursday at Southern Hills Country Club.

McIlroy makes fast start

Rory McIlroy carded his lowest opening round in a Major for almost 11 years as he opened up a one-shot lead heading into round two. The Northern Irishman made seven birdies - including four in a row in a stunning spell - and two bogeys in a 65 that moved him to five under ahead of Americans Tom Hoge and Will Zalatoris. The total was McIlroy's lowest ever opening round at the US PGA Championship and lowest first 18 holes at any Major since the 2011 U.S. Open. "It was a great start to the tournament," he said. "I've been playing well coming in here. I've been carrying some good form. "It was nice to get off to that good start and sort of keep it going."

Zalatoris produces more Major magic

Zalatoris carded his lowest round in a Major Championship as he continued his remarkable record in golf's big four. The 25-year-old has played in seven Majors in his career, with four top-tens including a second-placed finish at the 2021 Masters Tournament. But he had never before gone as low as 66, a feat he achieved with six birdies and two bogeys on day one. "I'm very pleased with today, obviously. Anytime you can put up a 66 in a Major, you're obviously happy," he said.

Hovland feeling the love

DP World Tour Rankings in Partnership with Rolex leader Viktor Hovland revealed he was given a lift by the local crowds as he carded an opening 70. The Norwegian spent his collegiate career at Oklahoma State University and the local Pokes fans were happy to see him teeing it up at Southern Hills. "It was a lot of fun," he said. "Hearing a lot of 'Go Pokes' and 'Go Viktor' and a lot of good support out there, so that was fun. I was out of position a couple of times and instead of maybe letting that linger with the mood a little bit, when you hear people are rooting for you, it's kind of easy to snap out and refocus. It's been fun so far."
