Day three digest: 2021 Magical Kenya Open presented by Johnnie Walker

Everything you need to know from day three at Karen Country Club.

Magical Kenya Open

Justin jumped ahead, Veernan was very good and Kurt saw some positive signs on day three of the 2021 Magical Kenya Open presented by Johnnie Walker.

Here is everything you need to know about moving day in Nairobi.

Harding makes it look easy

It is just over two years since Justin Harding claimed a maiden European Tour victory at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and followed it up by finishing second here to enter the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking and earn a debut appearance at the Masters Tournament. Much has changed since 2019 but after a 64 containing an eagle, six birdies and a bogey, the South African leads by two at 16 under and is once again battling for a European Tour victory. "I'll give it my best effort," he said. "The golf course lends itself to a bunch of birdies. If you execute your golf shots and roll in a couple of putts you can certainly post a score. It's just a matter of really taking advantage of the par fives and a couple of the driveable par fours and at the end of the day just being one shot better than the next guy."

Course record for Veerman

As interviewer Iona Stephen questioned Johannes Veerman about his two-hour putting marathon on Friday night, the American flashed a smile and said "grinding". His practice session after round two may have been grinding but his performance in round three was anything but, as Veerman produced nine birdies in a bogey free 62 to post the lowest round in tournament history and break the course record to boot. "Yesterday I spent a lot of time just grooving my stroke down, trying to get the speed right and trying to get it down," he said. "Hole number two, I made a put from 15 feet and I thought 'oh my, I think this is it, I think we're rolling'. I'll just keep doing what I've been doing. I'm going to practise putting, see if it's still there, it should be still there after the round today. I'll just kind of keep the process going, I'm hitting it well, I'm putting it well now and for the most part, just keep it all in check. Do my post-round practice and then go for it again." He heads into the final day just two off the lead.

Good sign for Kitayama?

Golfers often thank sponsors but we're not sure if Kurt Kitayama was helped or hindered by an advertising board on the seventh. From the man himself: "At the seventh I hit the sponsor board with my drive and it got stuck in there. I got a rules official, but no penalty thankfully!" Not sure we've ever seen that before but the American parred the hole to go with six birdies and a bogey in a 66 that left him two off the lead. Do the signs point to European Tour title number three?

Anyone fancy a coffee?

Scott Hend and Richie Ramsay both entered the day battling at the top end of the leaderboard and both started Saturday with one of Kenya's most famous exports - coffee.

Hend fired a 68 after this cup of Joe and will head into Sunday in a share of second.

Ramsay had a less productive day with a 77 after starting his day with this.
