Day three digest: Australian PGA Championship

A home hero took over at the top while two early starters posted memorable scores on Moving Day.

Michael Hendry

Here is everything you need to know from day three at RACV Royal Pines Resort.

Gale force

We have become used to seeing the big hitters going for the green at some par fours but Daniel Gale didn't just have the putting surface in his sights - he was aiming for the cup. And he came agonisingly close to finding it and getting an albatross, but had to settle for a tap-in eagle two from a matter of inches.

What a difference a day makes

When Alejandro Cañizares followed up a double bogey at the 12th with a bogey on the 13th on Friday, his chances of teeing it up at the weekend looked very slim indeed. But he made three birdies in his last four holes to make the cut on the number. And he took full advantage first thing on Saturday morning, carding an eagle, eight birdies and two bogeys to sign for a 64 and surge into contention.

Ten better for Flanagan

Australian Nick Flanagan was also on fire on Saturday morning. He made nine birdies and no bogeys to tie the men's course record at RACV Royal Pines Resort with a spotless 63 - a whopping ten shots better than Friday's effort. That left Flanagan just two shots off the third round lead and in with a shot of claiming the trophy on Sunday.

Scott delights home crowds

The locals came out in numbers once again on Saturday, with many coming to see former Masters Champion Adam Scott in action. And they were treated to a back nine masterclass as he pulled off a wonderful approach for a birdie at the tenth, drained a monster putt on the 16th and saved the best for last - producing the shot of the day at the 18th to set up a closing gain which saw him take the lead.

Injured Hendry's heroics

Michael Hendry looked set to be in for a difficult day when he required treatment for an injury early in his third round. He continued to struggle as the day wore on but his golf did not suffer as he shot a 70 to head into the final round just two shots back. Things could have been even better for the New Zealander had he not dropped a shot at the last.
