Day three digest: BMW International Open

An early start, some low scoring and some very long putts were the order of a thrilling Moving Day at the BMW International Open.

Jordan Smith loves Germany

After making it 17 bogey free holes on Friday night with a remarkable par save after going into the stand on the last, Jordan Smith added another 18 flawless holes on day three. He made six birdies in a 66 that moved him to 13 under and into a one shot lead. The Englishman clearly feels comfortable on German soil after claiming his maiden European Tour victory at the European Open two years ago and with just one missed cut and three top tens so far this seson, it would take a brave person to bet against him. "I like Germany," he said. We can tell, Jordan.

Flying Fitzpatrick fighting for five in a row

Matthew Fitzpatrick came through the Qualifying School in 2014 and he has looked like a European Tour veteran pretty much from day one. He has won in every season he has had on Tour - twice in 2016 - and if he extends that run on Sunday he will have six victories at the age of just 24. He gave himself a good chance as he matched the lowest round of the week with a 65 to sit just one shot adrift of Smith. "There are four par fives and if you get good drives away on all of them they are all reachable - I’m obviously talking a perfect round," he said. "There’s four there and if you make a few putts to save pars and three more birdies. It’s a nice course for me and it’s scoreable." He knows what he has to do.

That bomb from Fitz was not the only long one today as Andrea Pavan holed this monster on the 14th. And while the putt was pretty good, the celebration from the caddie was even better.

Super Schwab edging nearer

Matthias Schwab had a very solid debut season on the European Tour after coming through the Qualifying School in 2017, registering four top tens and finishing 72nd on the Race to Dubai Rankings Presented by Rolex. He already has three this season and on Saturday recorded his lowest round on Tour with a 65. He heads into Sunday just a shot off the lead and this could be the big breakthrough in a season full of first time winners. "I've been playing okay the last few weeks," he said. "I'm just focused on myself and a good result will come eventually. Why not this week?"

Crowds continue to flock to Munich

Over 15,500 fans made it a record breaking day in Munich on Thursday and by the end of play on Saturday, over 40,000 had come through the gates to see the world class field gathered at Golfclub München Eichenried. They will continue to flock on Sunday and with Martin Kaymer just five shots back, they could yet get the result they crave.
