Day three digest: WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational

Some McIlroy magnificence set up a mouthwatering final round of the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational but there was plenty more to admire on day three at TPC Southwind.

Here is everything you need to know from Saturday in Memphis.

McIlroy bounces back - again

Rory McIlroy may have felt the love and learned a little bit about himself at last week's Open Championship but there was no doubt he was disappointed to miss the cut on home soil. At three over after 13 holes on Thursday it looked like he might be suffering from something of a hangover after the drama at Royal Portrush Golf Club but since then he has made 16 birdies and a single bogey to surge to 12 under and into a one shot lead. A third round 62 is his best of the season on the European Tour and best ever in 103 circuits in World Golf Championships events. But we shouldn't really be surprised - he has finished first or second in three of his last four appearances after missing a cut.

Let's get ready to rumble

McIlroy's remarkable effort means he will go out in a mouthwatering last group on Sunday alongside Brooks Koepka. It's the World Number One and the World Number Three, two men who both have four Major Championships each and could both quite easily go seriously low. They have played together five times before together in Majors or WGCs, with Koepka going lower twice and McIlroy getting the better of his playing partner once. They have never been in in the final group together on a Sunday before but one thing that could be in McIlroy's favour is that the World Number Three has won this event for the last three seasons.

Fitzpatrick lurks in the shadows

All eyes may be on that final group but that is just how Matthew Fitzpatrick likes it as he goes in search of a first WGC title. The Englishman is a Ryder Cup star and a five time European Tour winner but he spoke of being "under the radar" after taking the halfway lead and he still felt that way as he played in Saturday's final group with Patrick Cantlay. It is no judgement on Fitzpatrick or playing partner Marc Leishman that McIlroy and Koepka will take the lion's share of the crowds on Sunday, and the 24-year-old is more than happy to be chasing from two back. "I'm under the radar, I'm chasing as opposed to holding the lead which is arguably easier," he said.

Who needs a putter?

It says a lot about the standard of players we are dealing with on Tour that chip-ins are pretty common but it's not very often you see them on the green. Well, on Saturday, Kevin Na did this.

Later in the day Tyrrell Hatton was also seen using his wedge on the greens, although he was doing a putting stroke with it.
