Day two digest: 2022 U.S. Open Championship

Everything you need to know from the second round at Brookline.

Rahm

Some of the world's very best players rose to the top end of the leaderboard on day two of the 2022 U.S. Open Championship, with Morikawa, McIlroy and Rahm all featuring prominently.

Here is everything you need to know from the second round at Brookline.

Morikawa makes his move

Reigning European Number One Collin Morikawa posted the lowest round of the day to grab a share of the halfway lead. His second-round 66 contained just one bogey and five birdies and saw him head into the weekend on five under par alongside Joel Dahmen.

Cream rises to the top

Two-time Major winner Morikawa and Dahmen have a stellar chasing pack just behind them, with World Number Two Jon Rahm and World Number Three Rory McIlroy one back and World Number One Scottie Scheffler two adrift. Morikawa was not surprised to see so many big names towards the top of the leaderboard. He said: "It's a Major Championship. It's the U.S. Open. No-one has taken it deep so far and kind of run away, but you know what, right now my game feels really good." McIlroy did brilliantly to recover from an early double bogey, adding five birdies and two bogeys to sign for a 69.

Brilliant Major bow for Besseling

Wil Besseling is making his maiden Major Championship appearance this week and he has taken it in his stride, posting a pair of 71s on the opening two days to make the cut. Well done, Wil.

Rahm's eventful startย

Starting from the tenth tee on Friday, defending champion Rahm opened his round with a marvellous par save courtesy of an up-and-down from the greenside bunker. He then produced two excellent shots at the 12th to set up a close-range birdie but gave the shot back at the 13th. He bounced back in style, though, using every bit of his immense power and skill to eagle the 14th. Check out this approach shot...
