Day two digest: The Senior Open Presented by Rolex

American Wes Short Jr began the second round of The Senior Open Presented by Rolex as a joint-leader, but due to a late tee time, was overtaken at the top of the leaderboard by his fellow countryman Scott Dunlap. Short Jr was not content to end day two anywhere but where he began it, and closed out his round in astonishing fashion— carding three consecutive birdies on the final three holes to take a one shot lead on six under par.

The king of links golf still has plenty of magic left in him. Three-time Senior Open winner and five-time Champion Golfer of the Year Tom Watson came up the final hole of the second round thinking that he needed a par to make the cut. In bad position off the tee, this is what the 69-year-old did to go a perfect 18 for 18 in Senior Open cuts made.

In pursuit of the double

Darren Clarke is aiming to join Watson, Gary Player and Bob Charles as the only men to have won The Open and The Senior Open in their careers. The Northern Irishman has carded consecutive rounds of 68 to sit alone in third place on four under par. He will surely be a fan-favourite over the weekend at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

The Goose is loose

Retief Goosen is finding his footing rather quickly in his rookie year of senior golf. The 50-year-old won his first Senior Major two weeks ago at the Bridgestone SENIOR PLAYERS Championship and the two-time U.S. Open Champion will now head into the weekend at Royal Lytham & St Annes three shots off the lead in a tie for fourth place.

Major men

Also threatening for the Senior Open Trophy are a trio of players who have proven they have what it takes to win senior golf’s biggest tournaments. Bernhard Langer, who has triumphed in a record ten Senior Majors, Colin Montgomerie, who has three Senior Major titles, as well as Roger Chapman and Paul Broadhurst—both with two—are all tied for seventh at the halfway stage. This weekend at The Senior Open is shaping up to be one for the ages.
