EVR celebrates in style

After winning his first European Tour title and achieving his first Major Championship top ten at the age of 29, it's safe to say Erik van Rooyen entered his 30s with the wind at his back on Friday - but even he couldn't have expected this. After making three bogeys in the first seven holes of his final round in his 20s, he fought back to get into red numbers on day one. On day two he made nine birdies - including a third chip-in of the week on the ninth - to equal the course record with a blemish free 62 that left him just a shot off the lead. Happy birthday indeed. "The first thing I told my wife this morning: 'man, I feel really old'," he said. "But I guess I'm still quite young and what a way to kick off the 30th and shoot nine under. A little bit of a gift to myself. I've been working really hard on the game, as we all do, and things came together nicely today, so I'm happy."

DeChambeau can't stop smiling

The man Van Rooyen is looking to catch is Bryson DeChambeau after the American carded a pretty impressive round of his own. The 2019 Dubai Desert Classic winner signed for a 63 as he holed 143 feet of putts in getting to 11 under, and he was pretty pleased with himself. "It was a lot of fun," he said after coming home in 29. "Surely when you have days like that you can't help but smile out there? Making those putts the way I did, striking the ball the way I did, it's surely a joy out there. The confidence has got to be high. It is high and it's a lot of fun to see putts finally going in. Overall everything is going pretty well, firing on all cylinders."

You can't keep a good man down

Rory McIlroy did not make things easy for himself in round two. He had to fight to save par on his first four holes, missed a very short putt for birdie on the sixth and bogeyed the ninth to turn in 36. A birdie on the 14th got him back level before back to back gains on the 16th and 17th secured a 69 that meant he headed into the weekend just three shots back. "If this is the worst round out of the way, then it's not bad," he said. Ominous from the World Number One.
