DID YOU KNOW – ABERDEEN ASSET MANAGEMENT SCOTTISH OPEN
• When Phil Mickelson won at Castle Stuart in 2013 he went on to create history seven days later by becoming the first player to win the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, then go onto win The Open Championship.
• The five-time Major Champion will be competing in Scotland’s National Open for the 14th time. Mickelson first played in 1992. Aside from his victory in 2013, he lost a play-off to Grégory Havret in 2007. His 13 previous appearances is a record for an American playing in the same regular European Tour event.
• Only once since the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open began has the tournament not been the event prior to The Open Championship. This was in 1986, when the Car Care Plan International was the event before The Open. (The Scottish Open in 1986 was played in August at Haggs Castle).
• The co-designer of Castle Stuart Links, Gil Hanse is also the architect for the golf course to be used for the Rio Olympic Games.
• When Castle Stuart first staged the tournament in 2011 the Inverness venue became the most northerly course in the UK to host a European Tour event. A record the course still owns.
• The field for the 2016 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open contains seven Major Champions, two World Number Ones, seven European Tour Number Ones, eight WGC winners, 97 European Tour winners, 24 Ryder Cup players, 14 winners from the 2016 European Tour season and ten former Scottish Open champions.
• The 2016 Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open will be the 34th staging of the event, first played in 1972 and won by Neil Coles, beating Brian Huggett in a play-off.
• The Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open has produced 30 different winners from 14 different countries. Of those 30, eight have been Major Champions.
