• Defending champion, George Coetzee will try and become the second player to make a successful defence of the Joburg Open. The first player to achieve the feat was Charl Schwartzel in 2010-2011.

• Richard’s Sterne’s winning total of 260 (-27) in 2013 not only created a new tournament record but was the lowest winning score and in relation to par during that season.

• Should George Coetzee prevail again, he would join Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman , Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel as South Africans to win the same South African event in back-to-back years.

• Should George Coetzee win again he would become the first South African to win their first two European Tour titles on home soil, since Dawie Van der Walt, who won the 2013 Tshwane Open and 2014 Nelson Mandela Championship presented by ISPS Handa.

•  Richard Sterne will attempt to become the first player in Joburg Open history to win the tournament three times, having triumphed in 2008 and 2013.

• Of the 62 events co-sanctioned between The European Tour and Sunshine Tour, South African players have accounted for 38 of the titles.

• South Africa have won every year on The European Tour since 1991; 25 consecutive seasons.

• South Africa have won the last five Joburg Opens, dating back to the 2010 season. The last European Tour event where South Africa won five years in a row was the Africa Open, 2010-2014.

• The Joburg Open has the largest field of the season, with 2010 players.
