The European Tour Fantasy Race marches on once more in search of the very players that should be gracing your teams as you battle it out for one of our fantastic weekly, monthly or annual prizes.
This week we find ourselves amongst the rolling hillsides and gorgeous glens of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, Scotland, where last year Edoardo Molinari secured his Ryder Cup Captain’s pick after a scintillating final day’s play that saw him triumph over his brother and take the title.
One professional looking to replicate this kind of Scottish success is Denmark’s Anders Hansen who is putting together quite a tasty season so far. He currently lies sixth on the Race to Dubai thanks to three runner-up finishes in 2011 (Omega Dubai Desert Classic, Open de Espana, Saab Wales Open) and is coming off a fantastic showing at the US PGA Championship where he finished as top European and only one shot outside the eventual play-off.
Another who has caught our eye, and could be worth a little punt this week, is home favourite and former US Amateur Champion Richie Ramsay. This Scot currently lies in the magic 60th place on the Race to Dubai, which currently makes him the last man eligible for the season-ending Dubai World Championship. He will no doubt be wanting to climb more comfortably inside this mark and what better place than at home as he looks to build on a 12th place finish last week.
Someone else worth a look is India’s finest golfing export, Jeev Milkha Singh, who although having been a little quiet in 2011, has shown a resurgence in form of late. A sixth place finish at the Nordea Masters was followed by an 11th in Ireland (having led after two rounds) and most recently last week at the Czech Open where he finished 16th. He has a proven pedigree over the years, winning three times on The European Tour and multiple other times around the world, and could therefore be seen as a real contender this week.
Looking a little further outside the box, many have been tipping South Africa’s George Coetzee of late, having already racked up four top tens this year including third place finishes at The Barclays Scottish Open and the BMW International Open. He has won back home on the Sunshine Tour already this year, and is fancied by many to pick up a win on The European Tour soon.
And last but not least, it is the now senior Barry Lane. Having joined the over 50s last year he has flourished picking up two wins, both of which have been in Scotland, the most recent of which was a successful title defence at the Cleveland Golf / Srixon Scottish Senior Open last weekend. Couple this with his win up here in 1988 in the Bell’s Scottish Open and his recent form on The European Tour that has seen him claim three top 20s and Barry could be considered somewhat of a Scottish specialist and therefore a bit of a dark horse this week.
