Garrick Porteous

The 2013 Amateur champion is an outside pick for my team this week. He has a stroke average below 70 for the season and comes off a good finish last week in Northern Ireland (T15). The 31 year on came T4th at this venue in 2020 so will have fond memories of the Fairmont resort in St Andrew’s

Marcus Armitage

Having captured his maiden European Tour victory at the Porsche European Open. The Lancashire lad has achieved a dream and wants more success. He finished 7th here last year and I witnessed a masterclass in ball striking last week at Galgorm. If his putter warms up on the links he will be one to watch.

*Matthias Schmid *

The German was T19 last week and looked comfortable in his 2nd event as a professional. The silver medal winner has hired the experienced caddy “Wobbly” to guide him though his rookie season.

Matthias maybe 18 year old but he looks older in the way he looks and plays. He dominated as an amateur and is going to be a superstar of the European game

Masahiro Kawamura

The 28-year-old has been very solid over the last few seasons, finishing 56th and 38th on the Race to Dubai in 2019 and 2020 respectively. He’s continued that with nine top-30 finishes this year, including 5th and tied-3rd results the last two weeks. He’s performing above average in all four ‘strokes gained’ categories and is particularly strong off the tee. His stroke average is 69.88 and he ranks 6th in par 3 scoring with 2.94.

David Law

There are 17 Scots in the field at Fairmont St Andrews, and I like the look of David Law. He won in his home country in the 2018 SSE Scottish Hydro Challenge on the Challenge Tour in 2018 and secured his maiden European Tour title at the ISPS Handa Vic Open the following season. He has three top-20s in his last six starts, including a tied-15th last week in Northern Ireland.

Hugo Leon

The Chilean has climbed 383 spots in the world ranking to 360th in his last three events – 2nd at Le Vaudreuil on the Challenge Tour, and tied-14th and tied-7th at the Cazoo Open and ISPS Handa World Invitational on the European Tour. He’s played all over the world and he seems to be playing the best golf of his career at 36 years of age.
