Henrik Stenson
The former Open champion hadn’t had a European Tour top-10 since the summer of 2019 before he finished tied-4th and 3rd the last two weeks in the D+D Real Czech Masters and the Omega European Masters. He’s putted superbly and his approach play has been much better, although he’s giving up quite a bit of distance off the tee by predominantly hitting three-wood. He’s desperate to make the Ryder Cup team and needs another big week in Italy.
Matt Fitzpatrick
The six-time European Tour winner is dynamite in regular European Tour events – non-major or WGCs. He’s recorded a win, a runner-up and a tied-7th in the six he’s played since the resumption last summer. He’s also had five top-10s on the PGA Tour this year. He’s one of the best putters on the planet and that will come in very handy if this becomes a relatively low-scoring shootout, as I suspect it might.
Guido Migliozzi
The 24-year-old will be especially keen to do well in his home Open, and he’s still got an outside chance of making the Ryder Cup with two very big results this week and in the BMW PGA Championship. He has three runners-up finishes and a tied-4th at the US Open in his last 14 starts, and returned to action for the first time since the Olympics with an encouraging tied-7th last week. He’s 4th on Tour in stroke average, 19th in ‘strokes gained - tee to green’ and 20th for birdies per round.

Bernd Wiesberger
Wiesberger doubled the 18th last week in Switzerland to lose out on his 9th European Tour title. His ball striking is strong with 71% of greens hit this year and ranks 3rd in strokes gained tee to green. With a stroke average of 70 and being a past Italian open champion I expect the Austrian to do well again this week
Marcus Armitage
Having captured his maiden European Tour victory at the Porsche European Open. The Lancashire lad has achieved a dream and wants more success. He finished 7t last week and putted really well. When I hear that I think his form can run another week. Ranked 35th in the Race to Dubai Marcus is looking to round off his best year on tour in style
Calum Hill
The Scot finally broke through to the winners circle at the Cazoo Classic after one of the most steadiest years on tour I can remember. He backed that up with a t7 last week. Calum is top of the tours strokes gained which has helped him average 69 shots per round. A new course for all the players in Rome, I think somebody being good at every element of the game is a safe pick
