Fantasy Three to Watch in South Africa

Many European Tour players have made the short journey from Johannesburg this week for the Tshwane Open. Pretoria Golf Club hosts for the fourth time and provides a short, tight layout with an emphasis on strategy as well as risk and reward. South Africans have won three of the last four Tshwane Open titles and a host of locals are in the field again this week.

Dean Burmester

Many in South Africa regard Dean Burmester as possibly the next South Africa to break through on the European Tour. The 27 year was born in Zimbabwe but has made his home in South Africa, winning six times on the Sunshine Tour. In his eight starts since November 24th, Burmester has two top fives and seven top 20 finishes. He finished fourth at the BMW SA Open in January and was just one of the lead with 18 holes to play last week before falling to a tie for 11th. For a long time his game was built on distance, and while he still possesses prodigious length of the tee, Burmester has honed in his approach play and short game, finishing in the top 20 in Putts per GIR in both of his European Tour starts in South Africa so far this year. Since the Tshwane Open moved to Pretoria Country Club, Burmester has broken par in all of his eight rounds and finished third and fourth respectively since 2015.

Form horse: Romain Langasque

Romain Langasque during the Joburg Open

Few players in recent years have made the transition from amateur to professional as well as Romain Langasqlanue. The Frenchman, who won the Amateur Championship in 2015, finished ninth in the Road to Oman on the Challenge Tour last year and has made an impressive start to his rookie season on the European Tour. A top 15 finish last week in Joburg continued his streak of finishing in the top 40 in every start of his rookie year so far. The 21 year has been striking the ball impressively as well, hitting over 80 percent of greens in each of his last two starts. Entering the week, Langasque has just one missed cut compared to six top five finishes in his last 23 professional starts and looks on the verge of a big week. He arrives in Pretoria well rested, playing just his fourth event in seven weeks and could be one to watch this week.

Wildcard: Haydn Porteous

Haydn Porteous - tees off on the 1st hole on the final day of the 2017 Joburg Open

A year after announcing himself on the world stage with a win at the Joburg Open, Haybn Porteous is showing signs of that form again entering this week. Top straight top 30 finishes and three rounds of 67 or lower in his last two starts show that he is trending well coming back to Pretoria. The 22 year old finished in the top ten here 12 months ago despite a closing 73. Porteous loves to be aggressive and this week's venue could suit that type of confidence.

Those are our picks, now it’s time to make yours. Good luck!
