Fast start on Tenerife excites Enoch

Rhys Enoch admitted excitement may have got the better of him as he made a lightning fast start to prompt talk of a 59 for the third week in a row on the European Tour at the 2021 Canary Islands Championship.

The Welshman eagled two of his first three holes and was seven under after five and eight under after eight as he put on a show on the back nine at Golf Costa Adeje.

After Wu Ashun, John Catlin and Scott Jamieson had all had us on 59 Watch in recent weeks, all eyes turned to Enoch, who still had three par fives to come.

They proved to be his undoing, however, as he made a pair of sixes on the 18th and first and signed for a 65 after coming home in 36.

The 32-year-old has a best finish of 20th on the 2021 Race to Dubai but revealed he was confident coming into this week.

"I had a feeling in the build-up that I was going to play well," he said. "I had a nice week two weeks ago in Gran Canaria. Last week I was tired and not really on it. I just had a good feeling I was going to get going.

"Made a lovely two to start on the quite difficult 10th. Hit a four iron into four feet at the par five 11th, knocked that in for eagle, then holed a gap wedge from the right rough on 12 to go five under.

"Hit it in close at the par five next, lipped out to go seven under so I was six under.

"I just felt great, really. Managed to birdie 14 as well. Then birdied 17 - nearly holed a sand wedge, pitched it two inches from the cup.

"I think I just got a little excited. I was calm but excited on 18 because I was thinking it was a reachable par five to go ten under through nine.

"I just got really quick off the tee, hit a snapper, and I don't really tend to hit those shots. I ended up scrambling for bogey.

"From there it was just a mish mash really. Loads of good golf, two bad swings, some great saves. I'm not sure what to say really.

"I wasn't getting excited or thinking about that (shooting 59). I did a really good job of just putting that in a drawer and hitting the next shot, until the 18th tee I suppose. It's always in your head but I wasn't thinking about it."
