England's Ross Fisher led American Anthony Kim by one after the morning round of their 36-hole Volvo World Match Play Championship final in Spain.
But it could have been better for the 28 year old. After his opponent three-putted the 568 yard 18th for par Fisher did the same.
The Wentworth golfer took the lead on four separate occasions, but could never double it. Kim levelled with birdies on the seventh, ninth and 13th, but fell behind again by bogeying the 464 yard 16th.
In the 18-hole third place play-off, meanwhile, Australian Robert Allenby holed in one with a 230 yard five wood at the sixth, but had to birdie the last to take the game into sudden death.
That produced the better golf. While Fisher was round in an approximate five under 67 and Kim 68 the players they had beaten in the semi-finals both had eight under 64s.
Allenby won a superb match in fitting style by sinking an 18 foot eagle putt from off the back of the green on the first extra hole. It made him ten under for 19 holes.
Cabrera was only ten feet away in two, but pushed his eagle attempt wide.
Allenby won €250,000 and Cabrera €200,000, which puts him eighth on The Race to Dubai.
Fisher, currently seventh, had the chance to go fourth by winning the title.
Fisher and Kim halved the first three holes of the afternoon round, Fisher making putts of seven and nine feet to retain his advantage.
Fisher struck at the 22nd and 23rd to move three up. First came a tremendous 35 foot eagle putt and then he birdied the par five first to capitalise on Kim driving up against the rocks and having to chop out.
The Los Angeles golfer came back with a 15 footer on the next, though, to reduce his deficit.
