Founder of China Golf Association Dies Aged 94

Rong Gao Tang, who in 1985 founded the China Golf Association and became its first chairman, died this week at the age of 94.

Mr Rong, who continued to work as a consultant for the CGA after his spell as Chairman, is highly regarded for his leading role in developing Chinese sport.

China’s Zhang Lain-wei was one of the first to play tribute when he said: “He was one of the most influential icons on the Chinese sport scene and he lead the way for over 20 years for the China golf development.  He helped me a lot.  He was a good mentor and leader, a very kind man.

“I thank him a lot for leading us. Playing better this week in Hong Kong would be the best tribute to the honourable Mr. Rong.”

Liang Wen-chong, China’s number one golfer, commented: “I have emotions of sadness and surprise.  I salute him for his unconditional contributions and support to golf all through the years.”

George O’Grady, Executive Director of The European Tour, said: “Everyone connected with The European Tour has benefited from the vision of Rong Gao Tang.

“His foresight in establishing the Chinese Golf Association in 1985 laid the foundations for the development of golf in China and the very strong relationship that has now been formed between the CGA and The European Tour.”

Rong Gao Tang was born in Bazhu of Hebei province in 1912. He was named the vice-chairman of the All China Sports Federation and headed the Chinese delegation who participated at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

He was elected secretary-general of the National Committee for Physical Education and Sport after the Olympic Games and appointed the vice president of the committee in 1979. He has worked as an advisor to the committee since August 1981.

He was awarded a silver Olympic Order by former IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch in 1983 in recognition of his contributions to China's sports development. This was the first time a Chinese sports leader ever won such a great honor.
