Fraser looking to continue Fanling love affair

Marcus Fraser is looking to end the calendar year on a high at a golf course he loves when he tees it up at the UBS Hong Kong Open this week.

The Australian claimed his third European Tour title and first in six years at the Maybank Championship Malaysia while also finishing fifth at the Olympic Men's Golf Competition in 2016.

He arrives in Fanling still in with a chance of claiming the Asian Tour Order of Merit and with four top tens in eight appearances at this event, the 38 year old is excited as he aims to bounce back from a missed cut at the Australian PGA Championship.

"I love this golf course," he said. "It's definitely in my top three favourite tournaments of the year.

"I think had it been any other week, I would have shut it down for the year. I love this golf course and love this tournament.

"It's just like an old golf course, tree-lined and small greens, and there's no just bombing away and just hitting it. You've got to think your way around the golf course and I really enjoy it.

"It's one of the few golf courses of the year that I really enjoy playing, and there's probably only a handful that I really, really enjoy. It's probably one of the first ones that I make part of my schedule."

Fraser finished 49th on the Race to Dubai Rankings presented by Rolex last season after missing just five cuts in 21 events.

His win and his performance in Rio were his only top tens, however, and he is looking to work hard over the break and come back stronger in 2017.

"There's been some good weeks there, there's been some awful weeks," he said. "Majority of the weeks have been pretty average, so it's been a frustrating year. The good thing is that there is some good there.

"So there's plenty to work on in the break. Going to take a couple of months off and charge the batteries up."

Scott Hend is the man Fraser is looking to chase down for the Asian Tour title but even if Fraser were to win, a finish of solo 13th or better would still hand Hend the big prize.

Hend won his first European Tour event here in 2014 and followed it up with victory at last season's True Thailand Classic Presented by Chang.

That triumph was one of six top tens in the 2016 season and after starting the 2017 campaign with another last week, Hend is in confident mood

"It's been a great year," he said. "On a scale of one to ten, probably I'd rate it around an eight. It would have been nice to win more. I've been in position to win and that's what we are all about.

"We play as professionals to try to get in position to win. And playing solid against European fields in Europe, their home ground, has been what's more satisfying to me. I've actually been able to grind out a couple of top tens and top fives and had opportunities to win in Europe.

"I'd probably rate it a ten if I had won on European soil but, as yet, I haven't done that yet. That's still to come."
