David Frost of South Africa set a new course record of seven under par 65 at Atlantic Beach GC on Thursday to take the halfway lead at the African leg of International Final Qualifying for the Open Championship with compatriot Louis Oosthuizen and Switzerland's Andre Bossert just one adrift.
Frost took advantage of unexpectedly benign seaside conditions to find seven birdies and avoid dropping a shot to reach the halfway mark with a one stroke lead.
The top three players at the end of tomorrow’’s second round will gain automatic entry into the 134th Open Championship at St Andrews in Scotland from July 14-17.
South African Titch Moore, who progressed through last November’’s Qualifying School, and Omar Sandys share fourth place at minus four, with Scotland’’ s Doug McGuigan, Zimbabwean Mike Lamb, Fulton Allem and Tjaart van der Walt tied for sixth one shot further back.
