David Frost of South Africa booked an early berth for the 134th Open Golf Championship at St Andrews in July with a one shot victory in the International Final Qualifier-Africa at a windswept Atlantic Beach Golf Club in his home country.
The 45 year old, who opened with a course record 65, holed a birdie putt from 16 feet on the 18th green for a second round 76 and a three under par total of 141, one shot better than Switzerland’’s André Bossert, Scotland’’s Doug McGuigan and Tjaart van der Walt of South Africa, who went to a sudden-death play-off to determine the remaining two spots.
Bossert claimed the first place with a par on the tenth hole, before McGuigan was handed the chance to make his first appearance in a Major Championship five holes later when Van der Walt, a qualifier at Atlantic Beach last year, missed a three foot par putt on the 18th green.
“I'm looking forward to going to St. Andrews,” said Frost. “There's a nice ambience there and I know the golf course very well. I've played there over 150 times what with all the dunhill cups there over the years.”
