Garcia aiming for big finish to stellar year

Sergio Garcia will bring down the curtain on his incredible 2017 when he tees it up at this week's Australian PGA Championship.

The Spaniard won his first Major Championship at the Masters Tournament in April and that was sandwiched by victories at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and the Andalucia Valderrama Masters hosted by the Sergio Garcia Foundation.

That is the first time he has won three times in a calendar year on the European Tour after claiming two wins in 1999, 2008 - when he also won the Players Championship on the US PGA Tour - and 2011.

Off the course, the 37 year old has got married to Angela, with the couple expecting their first child next year, and Garcia is happy to admit this has been the best year of his career to date.

"It sits on top," he said. "I think 2017 and 2008 are definitely the best years I've had in my career.

"This one, it's a little bit more special because I won three times in Europe which I've never done in my career.

"Obviously winning the Masters, getting married, expecting a little baby girl, so it is definitely top."

With a Green Jacket in the wardrobe, his wife by his side and a baby on the way, everything is looking good in Garcia's world but that does not mean he is not still aiming for bigger and better things on the golf course.

"What matters is what I expect from myself," he said. "I know what I want to do and I know where my expectations are and I know what I need to improve on. So if I can do that, I know that my game is still in great shape.

"I'm still fairly young so I can still achieve many, many things but it's fun to be able to have those possibilities and put some nice expectations for yourself."

Garcia is playing his third week in a row after a globetrotting end to the year which has seen him end the 2017 campaign at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai and start the 2018 season at the UBS Hong Kong Open.

You could be forgiven for thinking he may be wanting to wind down in a country that is one of his favourites to visit but the competitive flame always burns bright and Garcia is eager to claim European Tour win number 15 at RACV Royal Pines Resort.

"Everybody knows how much I love to play all over the world," he said. "So that was one of the biggest motivations to be back here, which is a place I enjoy coming back and playing. I think it's quite simple when it gets down to that, it's places that you want to be.

"My wife, Angela, she's never been to Australia, so it's the first time and it's also a good experience for her. So it was just a great combination of things to make it down here.

"When it gets towards the end of the year everybody gets a little bit tired, not only myself but everyone else, looking forward to holidays and Christmas and stuff.

"But at the end of the day, we are professionals and when we stand there on the first tee we try to do the best we can every single week.

"Last week I was a little bit tired and probably because of that, mentally, I wasn't quite as sharp and probably that's why I struggled a little bit on the greens more than I usually do. But that doesn't mean that if I get in a good rhythm here I can't have a great week.

"I am excited about Christmas and some down time but at the same time, I'm real excited about this week because I haven't played in Australia for a long time and I'm excited to play in front of all the Aussies again and I get to enjoy them as much as they will enjoy me."
