The short third hole at Dove Mountain was the place to be when the quarter-finals of the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship began.
Four balls were put in the water - one by Thai Thongchai Jaidee, two by South African Retief Goosen and one by Open Championship winner Stewart Cink, the only American left in.
All three lost the hole not surprisingly, but Jaidee hit back to be one up on Ian Poulter after five holes.
A new forward tee appeared to catch them all on the hop and Goosen and Villegas fell one down to Colombian Camilo Villegas and Paul Casey respectively.
Oliver Wilson was the third Englishman hoping to win the title - it would be his first as a professional after nine runners-up finishes - but after taking the first off Sergio Garcia with a par four the Spaniard won the second and fourth to move into the lead.
Garcia was the first player to take a real grip on a match, but Wilson had only himself to blame.
Having fallen behind, Wilson bogeyed the fifth and then needed two attempts to get out of a greenside bunker on the short sixth and fell three down.
Poulter levelled against Jaidee with a birdie at the long seventh, Casey was still one up on Cink after four and Villegas doubled his advantage over Goosen with a ten foot birdie putt at the fifth.
