Sergio Garcia fired a best of the day six under par 66 to move within one stroke of the lead held by America’’s Kenny Perry as he chases his second victory in the Nedbank Golf Challenge at Sun City in the space of three years.
Two years ago the Spaniard chipped in at the first extra-hole of a sudden-death play-off to defeat defending champion Ernie Els and once again he is challenging for the title following around that included five birdies and an eagle in an impressive display.
Garcia made his move on the back nine, hitting a six iron to 16 feet on the par five tenth hole to set up an eagle three before birdieing the 15th, 16th and 18th holes to complete a memorable day.
I feel pretty comfortable at the moment,” said the Ryder Cup player. “I am playing well and if I can keep things going it will be a fun weekend.”
Perry leads after a four under par 68, ahead of Garcia and Jerry Kelly. Retief Goosen kept South Africa’’s interest alive with a five-under round of 67 to move to seven under par after 36 holes, just four-shots off the lead. He was joined in joint fourth place by Northern Ireland’’s Darren Clarke, America’’s Chris DiMarco and Fiji’’s Vijay Singh joined him on 137.
