Garcia stays ahead at BMW Masters

Sergio Garcia maintained his one shot lead in the second round of the BMW Masters as he continued to master the conditions around Lake Malaren Golf Club.

An opening 64 in wet but calm weather had handed the Spaniard the overnight lead and, while the wind got up in round two, Garcia was unfazed and turned in 33 to sit clear of Lucas Bjerregaard.

While conditions were considerably tougher than they had been on Thursday, birdies could still be made, as was proved by Peter Uihlein who made a remarkable seven in a row from the 15th after starting on the back nine.

With Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy not present in Shanghai this week, there was an opportunity for the chasing pack to seize the initiative ahead of next week's DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, but Justin Rose - fifth in the standings - was six off the lead.

Danny Willett is McIlroy's nearest challenger and he was enduring a second consecutive frustrating day before back-to-back birdies on the tenth and 11th got him to two under for the day and the tournament.

Garcia started with two pars but picked up a shot on the par five third and then holed an excellent 10-footer down the hill on the sixth for another birdie.

A glorious approach to the seventh handed him an eagle opportunity and, although he missed that, the birdie was a formality and he was 11 under.

Bjerregaard has four top tens in his last seven starts as he searches for a first European Tour win and turned in 35 after starting on the tenth with two birdies and a bogey. But he came to life on the front nine with further gains on the second, fourth and sixth.

Ross Fisher opened with consecutive birdies and made another gain on the seventh as the man who lost out in a play-off here last year continued his recent good form to get to nine under.

Thongchai Jaidee had made two late bogeys on Thursday to slip down the leaderboard and when he dropped another shot on the fifth, he was well off the pace.

But birdies followed on the seventh, ninth, tenth, 13th and 15th to move him alongside the Englishman.

Ian Poulter made four birdies from the 13th to sit eight under alongside Byeong-hun An and Paul Casey.

Victor Dubuisson was then seven under with Uihlein, Søren Kjeldsen and Francesco Molinari a further shot back.
