Spain’’s Sergio García will make his first appearance in the Balearic Islands later this year having confirmed his participation in the Mallorca Classic, which will take place at Pula Golf Course, Majorca, from October 14-17.
The inclusion of García, the World Number Ten, in the field will give the Mallorca Classic, promoted by Matchgolf, a huge boost and help increase the profile of the island of Majorca, one of the leading golf destinations in the Mediterranean.
Prize money has increased by 150% since last year to €1,000,000 and the tournament has progressed from a dual ranking event last year, when it was won by Spain’’s Miquel Angel Jimenez, to a full European Tour event.
“I am very happy to be able to play for the first time as a professional in the Balearic Islands and to help to promote the Mallorca Classic in its second year on The European Tour International Schedule,” said Garcia, winner of two titles on the US PGA Tour this year.
José Aloy, General Manager of Commercialisation of the Balearic Tourist Board, said: “The Mallorca Classic is the star event to promote the Balearic Islands and we welcome Sergio and thank him for helping us position Mallorca as an elite golf destination worldwide, taking into consideration his tight calendar.”
Romeo Sala, President of Pula Golf, added “We have been making some changes to the course in the last few months with José María Olazábal and without a doubt, the presence of Sergio, one of the world’’s leading golfers, makes us very proud and enforces our objective to keep improving so that the Mallorca Classic is one of the best tournaments in Europe.”
Javier Gervás, General Manager of Matchgolf, said: “I want to personally thank Sergio for his effort and support in playing the Mallorca Classic within his tight calendar. The Mallorca Classic is a young tournament, with a great future in Europe. Without a doubt, the presence of Sergio is very important; we are very happy with his participation and look forward to seeing him in the second edition of the event.”
