Ignacio Garrido of Spain has won The Royal Bank of Scotland Shot of the Month Award for May. He receives The Royal Bank of Scotland Shot of the Month Trophy from Waterford Crystal and a cheque for £1000 to be donated to a charity of his choice.
Garrido played an exquisite chip from the side of the 18th green at Wentworth Club to defeat South Africa’’s Trevor Immelman at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off for the Volvo PGA Championship.
That shot, voted as the best played by a European Tour Member during May, finished just two feet from the hole and sealed his second win on The European Tour International Schedule as Immelman three-putted from the front of the green.

The winning shot was selected by a panel comprising The European Tour and the golfing media, while the crucial 12 foot par putt made by Ireland’’s Padraig Harrington at the 72nd hole in the Deutsche Bank-SAP Open TPC of Europe was voted in second place. Third place went to Ian Poulter’’s 50 foot eagle putt at the 11th hole in the fourth round on his way to winning The Celtic Manor Resort Wales Open.
Garrido said: “It might not have been too difficult a shot under normal conditions, but under pressure, even a one foot putt presents problems. I picked my spot on the green and fortunately there was enough room to work with. It looked straightforward, but to get up and down was really good.
“I knew Trevor had a difficult putt and also, psychologically, I felt that if I could hit it close he would think he had to get it closer. If I had chipped it two or three metres away he would have felt he was in the driving seat. It was great to win the title and this award adds to my sense of achievement.”
The Royal Bank of Scotland Shot of the Month Award, in association with The European Tour, Sky Sports and Golf Weekly, is presented to the Tour Member for the shot judged to be the most outstanding played during each calendar month on The European Tour International Schedule. In December 2003, the winning shots from each month will be entered towards The Royal Bank of Scotland Shot of the Year Award.
Garrido is the fifth monthly winner, following Trevor Immelman (January), Paul Casey (February), Robert-Jan Derksen (March) and Fredrik Jacobson (April).
