Player support of worthwhile causes was evident during the first day of the BMW PGA Championship when GOLFAID, the players’ own charity presented cheques of £30,000 to Sport Relief and Rainbow Trust.
The £60,000, split between the two charities, was raised through a number of fundraising events, including the Simply Red Concert on the Course.
Mark Roe, chairman of GOLFAID, and Peter Walker, General Manager, Sports Marketing, of BMW UK Ltd, made the presentations on the 18th green at Wentworth Club with the BBC’s Gary Lineker receiving the cheque on behalf of Sport Relief and Fritha Vincent, a fundraiser for the Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity, receiving the cheque from Roe.
Roe said: “The European Tour players’ own charity, GOLFAID, under the banner of Golfers’ Giving Back, has had several fund-raising opportunities this week, one being the Simply Red Concert on the Course and we had a Pro-Am team yesterday.
“Our thanks go to the BMW PGA Championship for their fantastic support. It has been great working with them and we have raised £60,000 to give away here today.”
