An opening 63 had given him the advantage overnight and he turned in 34 to get to 11 under on Friday morning and stay a shot clear of American Kevin Kisner.

Li Haotong, Russell Knox, Thorbjørn Olesen, Patrick Reed and Danny Willett were then at eight under as the wind got up at Sheshan International Golf Club.

The South African opened with four pars but picked up a shot on the fifth for the second day in a row before a nice approach to the par five eighth left him five feet for his second birdie of the day.

Another lovely approach followed on the ninth and the leader made sure he was blemish free through 27 holes this week.

Kisner had picked up birdies on the second and sixth to get to double figures but it was Knox making the real charge as he turned in 33 after starting on the tenth.

Li had also charged up the leaderboard with birdies at the tenth, 11th and 14th but a bogey on the 16th slowed his progress while Reed dropped a shot on the eighth after back-to-back gains on the fifth and sixth.

Olesen was level par for his round and Willett had a single birdie on the fifth as he tried to chase down Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy.

The Northern Irishman had threatened an early charge with gains at the third and fifth holes but he got into trouble off the tee on the seventh and had to play out of the trees.

He managed to get to the very front of the green with his recovery but could not get down in two and dropped back to five under before a stunning approach on the eighth saw him get the shot back.

Gary Woodland was a shot ahead of McIlroy after turning in 32, as was Dustin Johnson who was level par for his round after eight holes.

Daniel Berger, Steven Bowditch, Sergio Garcia and Scott Hend were then all at six under.

World Number Two Jordan Spieth dropped a shot at the second but birdies on the third and fourth holes moved him to five under.
