Peter Hanson, the Swede who produced a hole-in-one in a play-off to qualify for the US Open Championship last month, did not need anything as dramatic as that to move a shot clear of overnight leader Martin Kaymer at the Open de France ALSTOM in Paris.
With birdies at the tenth and 13th - he resumed on the back nine - Hanson moved to eight under par and into solo second place.
Kaymer, who started the event with a course record-equalling 62, was among the late starters in the second round.
Hanson caught Kaymer with his third birdie of the day on the long 14th, and moved ahead with another at the 18th.
England's Steve Webster was only two behind and alone in third place when he turned in 33 and then birdied the tenth and 11th.
Charl Schwartzel of South Africa was another to make a good start to his second round, picking up three shots in his first eight holes for a share of fourth at six under.
Alongside him were John Bickerton, Rafa Echenique, Thongchai Jaidee and Scott Strange – all of whom were yet to tee of their second round.
