The Omega Dubai Desert Classic has been ever present on the Tour since 1989 for all but one season, and in that time it has attracted some of golf’s best players to tee it up. Last year Alvaro Quiros proved his credentials as desert specialist, having previously won in Qatar in 2009, when he recovered from a triple bogey seven on the front nine with a hole-in-one at the 11th to go with another eagle on the front nine, alongside four birdies and a bogey to win by one from Denmark’s Anders Hansen. This event was also the scene of Rory McIlroy’s first European Tour win in 2009, and the inaugural event was won by 1999 European Ryder Cup Captain Mark James after a play-off victory over Australia’s Peter O’Malley in 1989.
