The Magical Kenya Open presented by absa is far more than just a golf tournament, making a tangible difference in local communities.
Celebrating its 57th edition and seventh since joining the DP World Tour in 2019, the tournament returns to Karen Country Club this week after four years at Muthaiga Golf Club.
With the support of absa, the event’s presenting sponsor for a 15th consecutive year, there are several initiatives aimed at creating a lasting impact – in keeping with the DP World Tour’s established Golf for Good programme.
Following on from previous years, the tournament is supporting nearby schools through the provision of learning materials, environmental education and infrastructure support.
Activities include painting at St Mary’s Karen school to help restore facilities and planting trees for environmental conservation.
A grassed driving range, to be used by players competing throughout the week, has also been built at the school, which will be used by the community long after the tournament.
The tournament is taking significant steps to reduce its environmental footprint, with no single-use plastic bottles offered on site and water provided in reusable containers.
With a spotlight being shone on golf in Kenya, there are also opportunities for the country’s future stars of the game to learn.
Pre-tournament clinics are providing opportunity for young up-and-coming golfers to meet and learn from DP World Tour professionals.
