Girardelli, a five time World Cup champion during an illustrious career, is an avowed admirer of Jiménez, and so took the opportunity to put the smile back on the Spaniard’s face by presenting him with a box of cohiba premium cigars.

Girardelli had earlier followed his golfing hero around Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in the company of Jiménez’s wife Susanna, a fellow Austrian.

The trio then dined together in the clubhouse, with skiing injuries likely to have been a hot topic of discussion.

Jiménez missed six months at the start of last season after breaking his right tibia below the knee during a skiing trip in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, in his native Andalucía.

Girardelli, meanwhile, sustained multiple injuries during his racing career, most notably in 1990, when he narrowly avoided paraplegia. One year later, he miraculously won his fourth World Cup title, before adding an unprecedented fifth in 1993.
