Joe Dean claims final spot for The Open at Royal Birkdale through Last-Chance Qualifier

Joe Dean claimed the final spot at this week’s Open Championship with victory in the inaugural Last-Chance Qualifier at Royal Birkdale.

Introduced for the first time this year, 12 players competed in an 18-hole stroke play event over the Southport venue on Monday for the chance to join the 156-player field for the final men’s Major Championship of the year.

DP World Tour member Dean carded a two-under-par 68, nervelessly getting up and down from a greenside bunker at the 18th to finish one shot ahead of fellow Englishman Andrew Wilson.

South Africa's PGA TOUR winner Aldrich Potgieter, playing in the group behind, required a birdie to force a play-off but instead he made a bogey to finish third at level par.

Among the other competitors were DP World Tour members Angel Hidalgo and Adri Arnaus, Germany's World Number 75 Matti Schmid and former PGA TOUR winner turned content creator Wesley Bryan.

Speaking to the DP World Tour after sealing his place, he said: "I mean, it's unbelievable. To have another opportunity to play in arguably the best tournament on the planet is always amazing and hopefully I'll make the most of it and do some people proud."

Dean credited his experience of competing in one-day tournaments on mini-tours as influential in producing a performance that built on the momentum of two top tens in his last three starts on the DP World Tour.

"I've said quite a bit that for some reason, one-day or one-round events just seem to suit me," he added.

"I've been playing a lot better golf recently. Still trying to work out why and how, but the quest goes on!"

After beginning with six straight pars, Dean made his first birdie of the day at the par-three seventh, before picking up another shot at the 11th.

Despite a bogey at the 13th, he briefly opened up a three-shot lead with an eagle at the par-five 14th.

That was quickly reduced to one as he bogeyed the par-three 15th and Potgieter birdied the 14th, before Wilson - among the first three-ball of the day - set the target with a 69 that featured a birdie at the par-five 17th.

Dean, however, remained composed to par his final three holes to secure a prized chance to win the Claret Jug.

It promises to be a special fortnight for Dean, who had his fiancée, Emily, on his bag, with their wedding set for July 21.

Last month, Dean narrowly missed out on securing his spot through Final Qualifying as the 32-year-old lost in a play-off at West Lancashire.

He will now make his third appearance at The Open, having made his debut in 2017 at Birkdale before finishing tied 25th in 2024 at Royal Troon.

It was in 2024 that Dean, having come through three stages of Qualifying School a year earlier, emerged under the spotlight as he went from working part time as a deliver driver to enjoy a breakout season on the DP World Tour.

Dean will play alongside 2016 Open champion Henrik Stenson and Max Homa, with the trio beginning their first round on Thursday at 7:08am local time.
