Jordan Gumberg opened up a two-shot lead at the halfway stage of the 2026 Hainan Classic presented by MAEXTRO after a second-round 66.
The American built on Thursday's spectacular finish to his opening round, when five straight birdies took him a shot ahead of Jorge Campillo at the summit.
Friday's round brought seven birdies and, for the second successive day, just a solitary bogey as he went round Mission Hills' Vintage Course in 66 to reach 14 under par.
That doubled his advantage over the Spaniard, who was 12 under after a 67, and Gumberg said: "I just picked up shots here and there as it goes.
"I don’t feel like I’ve done anything crazy, I don’t feel like like I’m stuffing pins to two feet on every hole, I just kind of kept plugging away – pick up a shot here, pick up a shot there kind of thing.
"My putter is still rolling, which is nice. I left a few out there today for sure on the greens, I had a few five-footers that didn’t go in, but that’s golf, they’re not all going to go in."
Gumberg's wife Luka was alongside him to enjoy his round and he said: "She goes everywhere with me. I think she skips one or two events a year, maybe.
"My best friend (Ethan Marcus) is on my bag as well. Having my wife and my best friend here makes for a fun time travelling."
Gumberg also credited playing partner David Law, who carded a 66 of his own to sit at six under, and said: "I think seeing him hit good shots and kind of judging off of what he did with the wind and stuff like that helped me for sure. It’s nice when you’re playing with a guy who’s in a good mood as well and just kind of keep that momentum going with each other."
Campillo started on the back nine, where he mixed two birdies and two bogeys, but had five birdies on the front nine including three in a row from the second to climb back into second place.
He said: “I made a few silly bogeys but I played great in the front nine, which was my back nine, and I made some great putts as well to finish, so it was nice.
“I think the Vintage Course plays a couple of shots easier than this one so I guess it was a similar score, seven under that round and five under here.”
Gumberg, looking ahead to the weekend, said: "Just keep it going and stay within yourself – all the clichés really. They’re cliché but they are useful. We’re playing good golf – take that confidence into the weekend, knowing that you’re playing good golf, and just kind of back yourself."
South African duo Thriston Lawrence and Dylan Frittelli shared third place on ten under, with South Korea's Taehoon Ok on his own in fifth a shot further back. Frittelli said after his 68: "It was a battle through most of the round, but I was happy with the overall play. It certainly didn’t feel like the picture that the scorecard painted."
Four Chinese players - Bowen Xiao, Wenyi Ding, teen sensation Yanhan Zhou and DP World Tour debutant Bo Jin - were in the group at eight under, joined by England's Andy Sullivan, Scotland's Euan Walker and Portugal's Daniel Rodrigues.
Xiao also took a share of second place in the team event with his amateur partner Zetao Ning, behind runaway winners Zi Wang and Quianzhou Wang.
