Kaymer aiming to tidy up his game in Atzenbrugg

Martin Kaymer will be looking to cut out the mistakes as he goes in search of European Tour win number 12 at the Austrian Golf Open.

The German is a former World Number One with two Major Championships to his name but he has not tasted victory since an emphatic victory at the 2014 U.S. Open Championship.

He missed an excellent chance to join the lead on the last at Diamond Country Club but still signed for a 70 that left him just one shot behind 36 hole leader Alejandro Cañizares.

The 36-year-old made five birdies in round two but two of his dropped shots came on the par threes, and Kaymer knows where he is seeking improvements.

"I would rather lead the tournament but I think it was a decent start to the golf tournament, I would say," he said.

"Today I missed a few opportunities and a couple of silly mistakes unfortunately happened, so I can build on my solid play and hopefully I can avoid a couple of mistakes over the weekend.

"I struggled on the par threes a little bit, especially with the tee shots on six and 14. Those two par threes really play with my mind a little bit, I don’t know what it is, so I need to figure it out over the weekend."

John Catlin was alongside Kaymer at six under as he also posted a 70, his containing four birdies and two bogeys.

The American finished in the top ten here last year as the event heralded the return of the European Tour after the coronavirus hiatus, and he went on to claim two wins on the 2020 Race to Dubai.

I got my butt in gear, so it's been nice to play well for the first two rounds but there's a long way to go - John Catlin

He has missed four of six cuts so far in 2021 but is glad to be finding some form and putting himself in position for another victory.

"I played well here last year and I love how the greens roll - I get over every putt and I'm super confident in my ability to make it," he said. "It would have been nice to go bogey free for 36 holes but so far I'm happy with how I played.

"I've been putting in some hard work over the last two weeks, me and my coach Noah, and we've been putting in the work for the last seven years so when I'm a little off I can go back to the driving range and put in the work.

"I didn't play as well as I'd have liked to at the start of the year and I got my butt in gear, so it's been nice to play well for the first two rounds but there's a long way to go."
